Menu bar calendar FAQ

How do I choose a menu bar calendar app?
Start with your macOS version, which is the biggest filter this year: the current Itsycal needs macOS 27 and Dato needs 26. Then decide whether you need to edit events or only see them, whether meetings or time zones matter, and whether you want free, open source, or one-time. The version table and the comparison above answer each of those. Facts checked 6 November 2026.
What is the best free menu bar calendar for Mac?
Itsycal, if you are on macOS 27: it is free, open source and still improving there. On macOS 15 and later Calendr is the free pick, and it edits events. On macOS 11 to 26 the frozen Itsycal 0.15.15 still works as a grid with an agenda. Facts checked 6 November 2026.
Which menu bar calendar still works on macOS 14 or 15?
On macOS 15: Dot, Calendr, InstaCal and Blipcal. On macOS 14 Sonoma: Dot and Blipcal, with every feature; Dato offers a frozen 5.4.4 and Itsycal a frozen 0.15.15 (6 November 2026). The full version table.
Is Dato or Dot better?
Dato has deeper world clocks, fullscreen alerts, widgets and Shortcuts, but cannot edit events and needs macOS 26. Dot edits events, parses natural language, has a week view and search, costs $14.99 for three Macs and runs on macOS 13. If you edit events, Dot; if you live in time zones and never edit, Dato.
Can a menu bar calendar edit events?
Some can. Dot, Calendr, InstaCal and Blipcal edit existing events; Itsycal and Dato cannot (Itsycal's README says create and delete but not edit; Dato calls itself a read-only view). Checked 6 November 2026.
Subscription or one-time?
Every dedicated menu bar calendar here is free or one-time: Itsycal, Calendr and MeetingBar are free; Dato, Dot, InstaCal and Blipcal are one-time purchases. Fantastical and Calendar 366 are the subscriptions people compare against.
